The Boat

Home for us now is the “Mar Azul” (Spanish for “blue seas”), a 1985 Defever 44 Offshore Cruiser.   We bought her in 2009, with the goal of fixing her up for future retirement, liveaboard and travels.

Here are some basic statistics:

Length: 44 feet

Beam (width): 15 feet

Draft (depth): 5 feet

Speed:  6-8 knots

Sleeping quarters: 2 cabins – 1 queen berth, 1 double v-berth

Heads (bathrooms): 2, one with shower

Galley (kitchen): small 3 burner stove & oven, 2 small refrigerators, ice maker, microwave; freezer and electric grill on deck

Helm stations:  2, one on the flybridge, and one in the main salon below

Sundeck:  our favorite place – a large shaded patio of sorts where we prefer to hang out whenever possible

Engines:  2 120 hp Lehmans

Generators:  2

Weight:  39 tons gross, 31 tons net

Shore transportation: a 10 foot inflatable dinghy with 25 hp motor
